Katheryn Harmer Fox: Sew your own boots
All you need is a sewing machine, some canvas, a scattering of scraps with sewing threads in matching tones and you are ready to make some fabulous clothing for your feet. Dance off into the day (or night) with your feet clad in boots made by your very own hands.
Join me in a 2-day workshop where you shall learn
All you need is a sewing machine, some canvas, a scattering of scraps with sewing threads in matching tones and you are ready to make some fabulous clothing for your feet. Dance off into the day (or night) with your feet clad in boots made by your very own hands.
Join me in a 2-day workshop where you shall learn
- how to make a pattern using your own feet as the last
- how to make a boot that matches your particular love of colour and design
- how to do fibre embedment using scribble stitch
- how to create something wearable, whimsical and whacky (or sober, stylized and serious if that be your bent).
- sewing machine (must be able to disengage the feed-dogs)
- 1 X pack jeans/denim needles – to sew heavy-weight fabric
- usual sewing paraphernalia (scissors, tape measure, pins etc)
- darning/embroidery foot
- utility knife with new blades (average size – needed for cutting the soling)
- ball-point pen (to draw your foot and pattern)
- 1 X pair of firm socks (gives your foot a smoother outline and you feel more comfortable whilst others are fiddling with your feet)
- A cutting mat (if you have – we can share)
- 1 X A1 sheet of light-weight white card (this is for the pattern to be cut from)
- 1 X roll of 2cm wide masking tape (will be creating the pattern from this)
- Enough rubber/nylon soling for 1 X pair of boots with a flat heel (available from leather shops, comes in different widths, weights and colours – get something light and flexible rather than heavy and stiff)
- 1 X 250ml pot/tin of contact glue (available from any hardware store. Need an applicator as well – large, flat popsicle stick or something like that)
- ½ metre of unprimed 100% cotton duck canvas (about 400 – 500 gsm – available from an art supplier, usually about 150cm wide)
- 1 X grocery bag full of scraps (non-stretch fabric) in your preferred colour range
- A selection of sewing threads in matching tones
- 1 X metre of suitable lining fabric (remember this is next to your foot, so you want something soft and inviting that is not too delicate. (Be guided by your predominant choice of colour in your scrap bag).
- A couple of heavy-duty zippers in the predominant colour are an optional extra (length depends on how high you want the boot to be: measure about 2cm from floor up to desired height. I have never used zippers but there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t).
- 1 X bottle of clear nail-varnish (to protect the satin-stitching next to the sole of your boot).
This is a 3 day class crammed into 2 days so you will be working, working, working. Kathryn assures me she will be offering comprehensive notes if you don’t get the pair finished!
