Sew a Picture using Fabric and Thread

“Sew a Picture” is an intensive 2-day workshop in which I teach all of the techniques that I have accumulated over the past couple of decades in developing my own style of textile art.
As the time is limited, I will provide a drawing of my own (the student will be able to choose from about 6 different subject matters) and I shall show each student how to translate the subject from paper to canvas. Once the basic drawing is stitched to their own canvas, then each student can begin to develop my simple lines into an image of their own; intricate, colourful and full of tonal depth.
Once the student has mastered the basic tenants of “fibre embedment using scribble stitch” and “free motion machine embroidery” he/she can build their own pictures by transforming dress material and thread into texturally rich images of their own.
Equipment needed:
· sewing machine (must be able to disengage feed-dogs)
· darning or embroidery foot
· normal sewing paraphernalia (sharp scissors, pins, etc)
· denim or jeans needles (bring extra)
· extension cord and adapter (for your machine’s particular plug type)
· extra bobbins
Materials needed:
· An assortment of fabric snippets (colour range dependant on choice of drawing)
· Various sewing threads (not embroidery) in similar colour range
· Unconventional fibres may also be incorporated (if so desired)
Kit: (There is a kit fee of $30 to $50)
· 52 page booklet
· A4 size drawing with source photograph
· tracing paper
· A4 size 100% cotton duck canvas
· collection of different coloured netting
